(Tagajo Ato)Site of Tagajo Castle Aza-Jomae, Ichikawa, Tagajo-shi According to the inscription on the Tagajo Castle monument, the fences surrounding the castle were built in 724. Since the Mutsu provincial government office and guard office were established here, the castle, along with Akita Castle in Dewa, played an important role as the base of government and military operations in the ancient Tohoku region. Early in the Heian period the guard office was relocated to Isawa Castle, but the government office remained in its original location until the middle of the 10th century. Currently, the remains have been preserved.
