  • (Koganeyama Shrine)
  • Name
    Koganeyama Shrine
  • Location
    Aza-Koganemiyamae, Wakuya, Wakuya-cho
  • Description
Wakuya Shrine was established at the site of Japan's first gold discovery, around 1,250 years ago. The existing worship hall was built in 1837, though some of its cornerstones date back to the Nara Period. The temple vicinity is in fact a nationally designated historic spot, being the most northerly location ever to produce traces of the Manyo culture. To this day one can see a stone monument inscribed with a poem recited by the Manyo poet Otomono Yakamochi in celebration of the gold that had been found there.
