    A habitat for migratory birds and a designated natural monument. An easygoing hiking course was developed around the swamps. In summer, lotus flowers are in bloom covering the water's surface; while in winter, swans and geese visit the swamps. It was designated as a national natural monument in 1967, a prefectural nature conservation area in 1973, a national wildlife refuge in 1982, and inscribed as a registered wetland under the Ramsar Convention in 1985.
